With the holidays, I’ve been thinking a lot about who others think we are - our families, friends from when we were younger, even “newer” friends. “I feel like I’m 12,” is a thought I often have when I’m with people who knew me when.
Are they creating that feeling or am I? Both, probably. We can get stuck in our own time warps and then slide back into old roles and old patterns - not super healthy or self actualized for sure! We tend to treat others the way we first knew them and yet are surprised when the tables are turned.
This holiday season as you gather with new relationships and old, be willing to see others as they are now. Give them a chance to have grown or changed, and if necessary, give them the compassion if they aren’t as strong as they once were. See them in the present, with present actions and emotions. Open to the possibility that we’re not 12 anymore.
Wishing you love and light this holiday season! See you in the new year!
